Mallet Dampening Etude and Exercise

By tedwolff, November 17, 2010

This new piece for solo vibes is designed to help develop single hand mallet dampening skills. If you’re not sure what single hand mallet dampening is you can check out an earlier post on that topic HERE.
To get started listen to the piece:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The primary purpose of the piece is to practice one handed, single mallet dampening techniques. In the first half of the piece you’ll be doing single mallet dampening with the inner mallet of your right hand, and in the second half you’ll be dampening with the outer mallet of your right hand. You use the “slide” technique sometimes (sliding the mallet to dampen the note), and at other times you can use your hand to dampen with. In every bar you need to dampen the eighth note on the “and of beat 2″. Let every thing else ring.

There are pedaling instructions written in for first few bars. Basically, the pedal is down for each 2-bar phrase. You should use this pedaling strategy for the entire piece to achieve a nice full sound. View/print the music: Printable Manuscript
